Job search update

Hey everyone!


Lots of things happening around here....I've had 4 interviews with 3 different hospitals--TX, SC, and TX. So far the only promising aspect is in Amarillo. Yes, I know....does not sound too exciting. Fortunately, the more time that goes by, the more positive Amarillo seems. I had an interview with a hospital in Dallas today that went so-so. The hospital recruiter was difficult to say the least, so we'll see if he gave me approval to the child life team. I've sort of given up on Charleston so far since they have been very fickle with communication. Right now I have one hospital that wants me---and that feels pretty dang good :)

So needless to say things could change for me very quickly in the span of a month or so. I will be flying to Amarillo to visit the town and hospital and have some on-site interviews. I'll keep everyone posted on what happens there and any decisions made.

Just a little stressful around here not knowing where I will live or when I will move or to where....but just trying to trust that the right job will come up! I've applied constantly to any hospital I find that is hiring in the south. So keep your fingers crossed!

Sorry it's been awhile

I haven't updated in awhile. In the meanwhile I've been busy finishing up my rotation on the Pediatric floor, visiting my family in LA, job searching, and starting a new rotation in the Pediatric Emergency Department (Peds ED).


Let me just say that my eyes have been even more opened by just 2 days in the Peds ED. In between real emergency situations, there are the kids that come in with pink eye or a cold. Seriously! The most "exciting" situation in my first week was a small infant that came in with a really high heartrate and a really high fever. The doctor put a bag of ice on the baby's head to try and lower the heart rate. Ended up that he just had a UTI--all that drama for just a UTI haha! Overall though I really like the ED since you never know what your day will be like and it's usually nonstop. The hours are a little different...some days I work til 7pm and others til 10pm. So that has been an adjustment! No more early hours though :)

This past week we got to go on the Community Cruiser and help with Big Shot Day. This is a bus that the hospital sends to underprivileged areas to provide free healthcare. This day was just for kids to get their shots for school, etc. My job was to provide distraction and support while the kiddos got the shots. Fun times!

Another cool thing I got to do last week was go to Camp Care at Lake Lure (where parts of Dirty Dancing were filmed). This is at Camp Lurecrest--they have a special week each summer for kids with cancer and their siblings to come to camp. It was so much fun! And you would never have guessed any of those kiddos were sick. Only a few bald heads out of over 100 kids. They were all just having fun being kids at summer camp. It was definitely a fun experience and I was worn out afterwards :)

In other news, my job search is in full force. I've applied to several jobs in various locations, but nothing coming to fruition yet. My next approach is to start calling hospitals and speaking directly to the Child Life department to send them my resume and totally bypass HR. So we'll see. I just have 5 weeks left--so keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer that a job shows up somewhere soon!

End of Week 2

Sorry for the delay in updates....


My 2nd week was even better than the first since I got to start doing more things. The big highlight was when one baby that had been in the NICU for 9+months got to go home. It was bittersweet as all the staff was sad to see her go, but glad that she could go home with her family. 

I've quickly realized that the NICU is not without drama. Just during Wednesday rounds we learned all sorts of interesting things about the babies, their families, etc. I got to attend a CMOMs (Charlotte Mothers of Multiples) meeting one night--that was very interesting and overwhelming at the same time. We had 2 NICU families come--one with twins and one with triplet boys. I think both sets of parents were overwhelmed too! 

I started doing infant massage sessions with the babies by myself. Infant massage helps develop their nervous system, digestive system, circulatory system, sensory integration, brain development, etc. I even got to teach one of the mom's how to do massage on her baby. She and her baby both really enjoyed it!

Each week I have several assignments to complete--such as weekly evaluations, reading articles and diagnoses, medical observations, medical terminology, charting, etc. It has been very reassuring to get such great feedback on everything I turn in each week. It is a wonderful feeling to know that I am exactly where God wants me to be.

In other events---I had my dinner club's monthly dinner at Hotel Charlotte for our "H" restaurant on Friday. Saturday I had a friend's wedding here in Charlotte. Sunday we had a young adult cook out at the park. So things have been very busy around here :) I can't believe it's already June and my last week in the NICU before moving to the OR rotation!

Last day

Wahoo!!! The day has finally come....my last official day at work! Yesterday my coworkers took me out to lunch. We went to my coworker Jeanette's husband's restaurant and had a great time. They were so nice to give me 3 pairs of scrub pants and some cute accessories for my name badge when I start at the hospital next week. It was exciting and bittersweet to have one last lunch with them.

My first official day at the hospital is Thursday. We have a short orientation thing on Wednesday afternoon. I'm very excited and can't wait for next week to start! I will hopefully update this blog more often with stories of my hospital adventures (of course keeping all patient information confidential). But there will definitely be things worth writing about with this career change and I hope to share that with y'all!

Quick update for the new year

I have officially applied for the child life internship and have started the first round of the interview process. This involves answering a few questions in an essay-style response via email. I'm excited and glad to be able to participate in this part of the process, and hopefully will be able to continue to the next round of interviews. I appreciate any and all prayers and good thoughts sent my way. I know that this is the career God is calling me to pursue---so I am going with that as I do all that I can to pursue these new career goals.
