Random forgottens

I was reading through my blog the other night and realized a few things...

1. It's been over a year since I found out that I was accepted to the summer 2009 child life internship. Now I'm working and preparing for the certification exam this summer. Time flies! It seems like yesterday I started this whole career change journey. And now I'm finally doing what I love!

2. I never blogged about Lucy's wedding or my family's vacation to the Outer Banks this past summer. So here's some pics and such below to fill in those gaps :) I'm a bad blogger, oh well :)

Lucy's wedding was wonderful! A great weekend and a beautiful wedding and fun reception with lots of dancing and of course cake!

Outer Banks, NC Summer Vacation:

I believe my sister and I successfully climbed almost every lighthouse in the OBX last summer. We had a great vacation despite the lack of beach time. Our day at the beach was not successful with high winds and cold temps. We managed to see as much as we could from the northern end (Duck, Corolla, Currituck) to the southern end (Cape Hatteras). We stayed at a great B&B in Kill Devil Hills with nice folks and yummy breakfasts! Maybe we'll get to go back soon :)

Goodbye NICU, Hello OR

My last week in the NICU was rather slow, but still good. I continued massaging babies, mainly working with the same kiddos everyday, which was cool to see the difference in them each day. I was sad to leave on Friday, even though I was also excited about the next rotation. The NICU is not without drama like the rest of healthcare. There are just some parents that shouldn't have children---that's all I'll say about that :)

Today I began my first day in my OR rotation. I got to ease into the early morning by getting there at 6:30am (instead of 6am). It will be interesting to see the what my role will be like here with kids of all ages dealing with pre-surgery fears and anesthesia/waking up from surgery fears. Today there were just 4 dental restorations of kids 3-6 years old. Apparently this is a very common procedure done in the outpatient OR, in addition to tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy, ear tubes, endoscopy/colonoscopy, etc.

Again I am learning that you see people of all sorts in healthcare. While the kids are always cute, the parents are not always so cute. This morning one mom asked where she could get something to eat and if we could give her a free meal ticket (even though her son was NPO--nothing to eat--until surgery), and the grandmother could only think about when she could have her next cigarette. All the while, the little kid was playing before his surgery on an empty stomach. Craziness. However, there was a normal family that was very supportive and loving toward their child---instead of being worried about food or smoking ha.

In other news...I'm dogsitting this week for Max, the wimpiest chocolate lab. I have to dogsit/stay at their house with him because he gets abused by the other dogs when he stays at the kennel. Pitiful. He is really sweet and lazy, just a big wimp!

I'm also getting ready for my first bridesmaid experience in my best friend Lucy's wedding this weekend. The dress is ready, the shoes are ready.....just have to pack and get some last minute items before leaving town on Thursday. I'm excited because it should be a beautiful wedding, and really fun reception ;)

This will be a busy week with dogsitting, babysitting, work, and getting ready for the wedding. I'll definitely post pics from the wedding next week and share more hospital stories :)

So it's been awhile since I blogged....life has been busy! I've been to Arkansas and back, to Louisiana and back...celebrated my first Thanksgiving in Charlotte with friends, and decorated my first real Christmas tree!

I am in the process of applying for a child life internship at the hospital where I volunteer--so say a prayer that will work out for next summer. I have my transcripts ready, recommendations/references in the works, and just have to finish the application to send in a few weeks before Dec. 31.

Things I've been up to in pics...
I had a reunion weekend with my 2 best friends from high school...Noelle and Fran...for Frannie's wedding in Arkansas. It was a great weekend seeing both of them since we are all spread out in NC, OK, and NYC now. My family came to Eureka Springs too for the weekend so we made it our "early" Thanksgiving weekend.

For Thanksgiving, my friend Nicole's family adopted me for the holiday. Thanks Gasbarros! I made my pecan oatmeal pie and corn casserole. I decided to start a new tradition for myself since this was my first Thanksgiving without my family. I baked Christmas cookies and watched Christmas movies all weekend. Then on Sunday, I delivered cookies to my friends and got to visit with everyone.

Some of the cookies I made...I also made peanut butter hershey kiss cookies and these yummy peppermint shortbread cookies dipped in chocolate.

On Saturday after Thanksgiving, my roomie Casey and I went to pick up our Christmas tree and start our decorations! We ordered our tree from this man in the NC mountains--my boss vouched for his trees being very full. Well, we ordered a 6 foot tree and ended up with a 7 or 7 1/2 foot tree! We had to trim the top just so we could stand it up! It is a big tree...but it smells wonderful and is very festive with all our ornaments. This was the first year I could use my silver bells that my Grandma gave me on a tree, so that was nice.

I just got back tonight from a short trip to LA for an early Christmas and the Winnsboro Christmas parade. I must say---we were very impressed with the parade! The entire McLemore family were the grand marshals of the parade because we received some Franklin Parish spirit award. Our entire family was there to represent our side and we celebrated an early Christmas with all the cousins too. It was a great weekend to get us all in the festive holiday spirit early!
